Carnival Glazes are a range of gloss earthenware glazes. Ideal for use in schools all the glazes are unleaded. Most glazes in the range are opaque, but depending on thickness of application glazes, where marked also offer a semi-opaque or transparent finish. They provide a beautiful and practical means of giving solid colour coverage to broad areas or for highlighting decorative or incised ware. Carnival Glazes are for application to bisqueware and when fired correctly will seal and protect the ceramic ware from moisture and discolouration caused by contact with food and liquids.

Useful Information

Depending on the firing temperature one or two full coats are required to achieve the best results. These are applied at right angles to one another (i.e. crosshatched), allowing each to dry in-between. A soft glazing brush should be used in order to minimise streaking. Besides brushing, Carnival Glazes may also be sponged.

Carnival Glazes are also suitable for use in controlled glaze effects, for majolica techniques and are overglaze compatible. They may be sprayed and thinned with clean water if necessary to improve glaze flow.

Carnival Glazes may be intermixed with each other to achieve an even greater range of colours, although it is advised that 2312 Lilac Blue is excluded from this advice. Carnival Glazes are specifically formulated for application onto earthenware clay that has been bisque fired to cone 06 (1000°C), then gloss fired to between cone 05 to 01 (1020°C to 1120°C). If fired to a temperature outside of the maturing range of the clay crazing of the glaze will occur. This will allow liquids to seep through and therefore is not acceptable for domestic ware, but is often found to be acceptable for decorative pieces. Carnival Glazes are also available in powder form, in 500g, 2.5kg (price reducations for 5kg and 10kg quantities) and 12.5kg packs. Some are also available in Dipping form.
