| 5681 - LEAD BISLICATE FRIT |
| Firing Range: 880-1100°C |
| Chemical Analysis: |
|
Lead is one of the potter's most valuable maaterials. Lead based glazes are well known for their rich, bright surfaces and good reaction to decorating colours. Lead used in fritted form enables the potter to formulate glazes with these qualities, but which are also safe.

| 5683 - BORAX FRIT |
| Firing Range 960-1140°C |
| Chemical Analysis: |
|
Borax frits are now used more frequently in the production of glazes because they are non-toxic and do not grey or go black in reduction. Although milkiness may sometimes develop where the glaze is thick and also become more obvious on red clay, this problem can be overcome with careful formulation.

| 5684 - CALCIUM BORATE FRIT |
| Firing Range: 1030-1180°C |
| Chemical Analysis: |
| The fitted form of colemanite, offering more stability. Should be used if glaze recipes specify colemanite in additions greater than 5%. Can be used a s a base in lead free glazes. |

| 5685 - HIGH ALKALINE FRIT |
| Firing Range: 860-1060°C |
| Chemical Analysis: |
|
The distinction between alkaline and borax frits is only in the amount of alkalies present in the frit, since both contain borax. In Alkaline frit the colour response from copper and manganese is the distinctive turquoise, or Persian Blue, and purple brown respectively.

| 5686 - LOW EXPANSION FRIT |
| Firing Range: 1020-1150°C |
| Chemical Analysis: |
|
This frit offers exceptional craze resistance and can be a useful addition to glazes that craze. Although milkiness will occur in large quantities. when glaze crazing is a problem up to 50% can be substituted for the glaze.

| 5687 - FERRO FRIT (3110) |
| Firing Range: 1000-1060°C |
| Chemical Analysis: |
|
A very low alumina frit which assists spectacular crystal growth in glazes. This frit has a higher expansion making a good base for crackle glazes. It will also produce copper blues and manganese purples. Featured in the recipes of many American raku glazes.

it is impractical to use certain fluxes in the raw state due to their solubility. To overcome this, frits are prepared. Fritting combines soluble materials with silica to render them insoluble. Frits may be used as low temperaure glazes, especially as raku glazes, but are usually modified with small additions of a variety of materials to raise firing temperaures, improve viscosity and aid suspension. All frits are waterground, with the exception of Alkaline Frit, which is dry ground.

This is an example of an "Amoeba" tile produced by Angela Evans. The tiles are made by extruded lengths of terracotta clay painted with blue and white slips and then drawn into. Copper oxide is put into the marks before bisque firing. The bright blue glaze is made using 50% 2201 Low-sol Transparent and 50% 5685 High Alkaline Frit plus 4% 5564 Copper Oxide.
