Air Drying Modelling Clay is suitable for schools that may not have a kiln, but still want to offer pupils the opportunity to experiment and create with clay. Available in 5kg packs. Walkers Clay from Australia - 01.02.2009 As many of your will be aware we have not had some of our Australian imported clays available for an extended period. The reasons are detailed below. We are now pleased to advise that 1067 PB103 is now in stock, as is 1069 White Mid-fire, 1084 Superior Porcelain and 1086 Imperial Porcelain. Unfortunately as you will note from below 1054 New World/5B and 1040 White Haze Raku are no longer available. These have been replaced by 1052 Feeneys Buff as the equivalent for the 5B and 1044 White Raku as the replacement for the White Haze. Although we have plenty of the Feeneys, we have only received a limited stock of White Raku, until our next shipment. Walker Ceramics was an old family run business in Australia, that has now been purchased by the originator’s son. Their premises in Melbourne were also owned by the family. Due to a legal hitch they had to vacate these premises before they could find an alternative site to set up the manufacturing of all their clay bodies. To resolve the problems this caused they have agreements that Bendigo Pottery, Australia’s oldest working pottery, now make all Walker white bodies under licence. All Walker buff bodies are made by Feeneys, which is another clay company also owned under the Walker canopy. To add to the problems they faced, a clay pit that produced Hallam fireclay closed. This fireclay was the base for many bodies such as New World Mix and White Haze Raku. Alternative to this fireclay had also to be sourced and tested. This has meant that some of the bodies now have replacements. 1040 White Haze Raku is replaced by 1040 White Raku and is packed in 12.5kg bags. Also 1054 New World is replaced by 1052 Feeneys Buff, which is also packed in 12.5kg bags. We are assured that both alternatives perform equally as well as the clays they have replaced. To quote Walkers they say in respect of Feeneys Buff and White Raku “It is formulated to have very similar characteristics to the 5B just with a different production method Hammer milled instead of filter pressed. It will however (as with the White Raku) appear darker in the bags as the Queensland clays have a higher organic content. It fires to similar appearance from 1000 1300. It should still be able to throw easily up to large bulbous forms and raku easily as it contains refractory grogs. These refractory grogs will contain NO CEMENTS as they are made from new firebricks bricks.
