WHAT ARE GROGS?
Grog is a material that is added to clay bodies to aid plastic strength and refractoriness. It can also assist with warp resistance in the manufacture of flat or slab work.
The common grogs available are:
Chamotte
These grogs fire off-white and have similar properties to molochite, but are less expensive than molochites.
Cordierite
Made by crushing virgin kiln shelves, they are currently the alternative to firebrick grog. These grogs do not suffer from the "lime-popping" problems that have been associated with firebrick grogs in the past.
Silica Sand
These can be sourced in various grades and with varying iron content. We supply a medium white and buff sand. See under Raw Materials.
Molochite
Made by calcining china clay. Fine grades can be added to slips to reduce shrinkage. Fine to medium grades are added to white bodies to aid plastic strength and refractoriness. Coarse grades are added to white bodies to impart texture and thermal shock properties. |
