Design Colours are like "poster paint" for clay. You can decorate with confidence as all colours reflect the final fired colour, except for FK21 Cobalt Sea , which appears mauve in the bottle but actually fires a deep, vibrant blue. This means that you can use our creativity & decorate your work trusting your eye.

Design Colours are easy to use and are suitable for greenware & bisqueware. They are suitable for all skill levels and techniques even majolica; they bring clay to life!

The colours are smooth flowing and can be extended using our Flux Extender for translucent effects.

APPLICATION

Designs can can drawn on the clay surface before painting, using either a soft lead pencil, e.g. 6B.

Shake bottle well before use. Use colours directly from the bottle, applying 2 to 3 coats for a solid colour or 1 coat for translucent colour. The lines will burn out during firing.

Remember to trust your eye as the unfired colours are a subdued version of the final colour, except for FK21 Cobalt Sea , which appears mauve in the bottle but actually fires a deep, vibrant blue..

Allow the work to dry and then apply your clear glaze - only one firing is required.

Design Colours can be fired between 1000°C and 1300°C: they will remain vibrant & will not burn out.

HEALTH & SAFETY

Design Colours are a highly refined underglaze and are completely lead free. They are water based and non flammable, except for the container itself. Your work will be food safe after glazing and firing (nb. FK7, FK8 and FK18 should not be used on surfaces coming into contact with food). When scratching or sanding back dry surfaces it is recommended that the normal dust protection precautions are taken.

PRODUCT LABELLING - BEWARE!

As many of the products used in the hobby ceramics and ceramic cafe market are imported it must be noted that the health & safety labelling requirements for the United States and European Union are different. America labels products based on risk, whereas in Europe product labels are based on hazard. At some point it is certain that all product labels for goods sold in the EU will have to adhere to European requiements until that time there can be confusion regarding American non-toxic labels and European Toxic labels. For example the red or reddish glazes and colours are achieved using what is known as cadmium encapulated colours. In America if under test these products meet certain requirements they can be labelled “non-toxic”. In Europe any product containing any percentage of cadmium encapulated colour must be labelled “Toxic”. Therefore as the Chrysanthos glazes and colours are labelled to meet European requirements reds will be labelled “Toxic”, but under tests met American requirement to be classified as non-toxic.
